Macro photography is extreme close-up photography, usually of very small subjects. The size of the subject is then usually bigger than its normal real life size. It is photography which produces images of smaller items larger than actual life size.
This Macro photo of a ladybird on a flower is so simplistic but engages the viewer because it contains so much detail of both ladybird and flower. The image is interesting because you can see things that you don't normally see in day to day life. For example you can see hairs on the ladybird's back which is not visible to the naked human eye.
Furthermore, the ladybird looks huge in this photo due to how much the camera has been zoomed in on. A vignette filter has been applied to this image which can be seen by the dark corners and overall darkened effect. |

As you can see from the examples above, macro photography can be of anything as long as it is up close. To produce the clearest photos, you could use a macro lens for your camera but a standard camera or phone can be used.
